Joel and Collin used to be real saddo/emo kids back in the day. And, as you know, sometimes old habits are hard to break. That’s why this week in the TSV shop Collin and Joel are spinning some COPELAND!
And the album they’re choosing to blast? 2005’s In Motion
Check out the first track on the album, “No One Really Wins”
Check out the rest of the album and ROCK OUT today!
In this new segment on the TSV blog, we bring you the crucial stats and info on some of Tower Sound & Vision’s key players. Today we focus the spotlight on Andrew “The Carty Boy” Carter.
Height: 6’1″ (though he says 6’3″)
Weight: 150 lbs.
Hair: Red
Eyes: Hazel
Clothes: Filthy
Specialties: Non-sequiturs, plaid shirts, rat-tails, fast vans, LED lighting systems, Cool(er) Ranch Doritos
Andrew is always behind the scenes. Whether it is setting up for ballroom events, or as a running stage-hand at live concerts, The Carty Boy moves fast, works hard and always gets the job down right, all while providing the TSV team with a little comic relief. Andrew recently received the TSV “Medal of Efficiency” which he was awarded after completing several grueling lighting tasks with exceptional speed and accuracy. And while Andrew fancies himself a “lighting guy,” we feel he is equally at home running out input snakes, setting up stage plots and installing professional audio/video installations. Over the past year, Andrew has been a real asset to the TSV team and has thus earned the title of “TSV Heavy Hitter.”
You know that we are really audio/visual geeks when we get excited about new cables ties…but hey, we’re not ashamed! Besides, color-coordination is never a bad thing! Check it out!
This little gem is from Nirvana’s 1991 Top of the Pops performance where apparently Kurt Cobain was forced to sing live over their pre-recorded backing track. As you can imagine, Kurt, Dave and Chris were not too thrilled with this.
What follows is the result…
And, as always, stay tuned to the TSV blog for more FUNNY VIDEO FRIDAYS!
This week, we’ve decided to get back to our punk roots! And what better way to bring us home than to blast some NOFX! So this week we’re taking you back to 1995 with NOFX’s I Heard They Suck Live!!
Unlike many other bands who do live albums, these dudes don’t cut anything out…songs, banter, blunders, it’s all there! But, perhaps the one thing that sticks out most with these guys and this live album is that THEY’RE REALLY REALLY GOOD! So check it out! Here’s Collin’s pick from the album, “Linoleum”
Joel and Collin LOVE Metallica. They also love Jazz. Now perhaps Metal and Jazz don’t immediately seem like two genres that could be easily fused together, but some musical genius out there on the old nets has managed to do just that! Joel and Collin are grateful for this wonderful amalgam, to say the least…after all, what better to rock out in the TSV shop than with a little Enter Sandman, SMOOTH JAZZ VERSION!
As you can tell from previous posts, we love microphones! In fact, we have a whole case of ’em. And even though we have a lot of mics, each one has their own specific purpose. Whether it’s the SM57 for mic’ing guitars, the Beta58 for clear vocals or a large-diaphragm condenser for more-specialized recording applications, we pride ourselves on our mic collection…so it’s no wonder we are a one-stop shop for microphone rental and sound system rental.
But today we thought we would focus on one very specific microphone that, while may not get rented out as much as others, is still an essential part of our mic assortment. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the Rode NT1-A.
The RODE NT1-A is the updated version of its older brother, The RODE NT1, which has been a go-to large-diaphragm condenser mic for almost 15 years.
The RODE NT1-A doesn’t differs very much from its predecessor, but we here at TSV think that it’s a little more durable and offers some sonic advantages, in particular with acoustic guitar and vocals. And no for some boring specs on this stylish microphone:
THE RODE NT1-A
Acoustic Principle: Pressure Gradient
Active Electronics: JFET impedance converter with bipolar output buffer
Capsule: 1.00″
Polar Pattern: Cardioid
Address Type: Side
Frequency Range: 20Hz – 20kHz
Output Impedance: 100Ω
Maximum SPL: 137dB SPL (@ 1kHz, 1% THD into 1KΩ load)
Maximum Output Level: 13.7dBu (@ 1kHz, 1% THD into 1KΩ load)
Sensitivity: -31.9dB re 1 Volt/Pascal (25.00mV @ 94 dB SPL) +/- 2 dB @ 1kHz
Power Options: P48 P24
Weight: 326.00gm
Dimensions: 190.00mmH x 50.00mmW x 50.00mmD
Output: XLR
And now that we’ve gotten the boring stuff out of the way, I present the following video…
Here, Joel demonstrates just how well one single RODE NT1-A can capture an acoustic guitar as well as vocals. This video was shot and recorded in one take, with no over-dubbing or re-tracking and the RODE NT1-A as the only source of all audio. So enjoy the video and the quality of the RODE NT1-A…
Last week we told you about our wonderful time in LA and the great event we did for the Entertainment AIDS Alliance. This week we thought we would take you “behind the scenes” to show you what it’s like for TSV to put on an event. We also managed to get some photos with some very special folks, namely, Pam Grier and David Bowers!
And what the heck, we decided to make a little video montage of our time out there!
We can’t wait to go back…in fact, we’ll be back in 2 weeks…so expect to see some more updates from TSV in the Golden State!
This past week was pretty busy with family and Thanksgiving, but Collin and Joel still managed to fit in some time to jam!
While we still are bumping M83, we have been really blasting Eye Contact by The Gang Gang Dance.
While I will spare you from my terrible writing skills with any attempt at trying to review this album, I can say that just about anyone will appreciate Gang Gang Dance‘s ability to get you moving but still mellow you out. It’s no wonder why these guys attained Pitchfork’s List of Best Albums of 2011.
We personally have particular favor with “Sacer,” which not only sounds amazing, but also has an opening solo drum section that works pretty well for testing levels on our PRX system!
Check out “Sacer” here:
Keep tuning in with TSV to hear what we’re blastin’!
We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. But now that the turkey has been gobbled, and the thanks has been said, we all know that this next month is going to be filled with Christmas cheer, holiday songs, and, if you work in an office, chances are HOLIDAY PARTIES! And while the Holiday/Christmas Party can sometimes be a drag, interesting memories are almost alway assured! But regardless of what your Christmas Party may look like, I’m sure Jimmy Fallon’s has got ya beat…check out this funny video from his Late Night with Jimmy Fallon from last year!
